Review: Carlson Pet Products Portable Pup Pet Bed

If there is one thing that is true about our ‘pack’, it’s that we are happiest when we are outside. Avid campers, we can often be found visiting our favourite parks as often as possible during the camping season. When we’re not camping, we’re lounging in the back yard, soaking up the sun. Earlier this year we discovered the Carlson Pet Products Portable Pup Pet Bed, purchasing one for each of our pups and I’m super excited to share it with you!

Our pups are an important part of our ‘pack’. When we head out on a camping trip, we have them in mind. This includes not only the essentials but also a little extra comfort. We pack our comfortable lounge chairs and hammocks, why not theirs?

Recently, we were discussing the fact that our girl Daviana is getting a little older. She doesn’t act it (at all) but she’s 12 years old and her hips aren’t quite as fond of laying on the hard ground, especially after a good hike.

This, of course, led to a search online to investigate our options.

We looked at a wide variety of dog beds including orthopedic style mattresses as well as different elevated dog beds. Unfortunately, the space constraints of the Jeep added a little extra challenge. After all, we couldn’t leave our tent or coolers behind to make space for a dog bed!

That’s when we found it…

Compact for Easy Travel

One of the biggest features that we were looking for was a bed that would pack up easily so that it could become part of our go-to camping gear. This bed from Carlson Pet Products is designed similar to the standard camping chair, allowing it to simply fold up and slip into a carry bag.

The good news is that you don’t have to sacrifice space for portability. When the bed is unfolded, it stretches 47” by 24.5”, more than enough space for our dogs to stretch out. With a suggested max weight of 95lbs, it will easily hold most medium to large-sized dogs.

Don’t share your house with a large dog like our two? The company has also created a small dog version measuring 24” by 24”, suitable for dogs up to 45lbs.

Easy Clean

Constructed with the same fabric that you see on a standard camp chair; these beds are easily wiped clean with a wet cloth.

Why is this so important? Consider, for a moment, how many dirty puppy paws are going to make their way onto this bed in a standard camp season. I know that mine don’t tend to stay clean when they have the opportunity (especially if it has been raining and there’s mud to play in)!

Strong and Sturdy

I love our pups, but they aren’t always easy on their gear and this has been no exception! I have watched Indy come running towards the bed, launching himself into the air and landing on it with no shame. The metal frame takes a beating and keeps going!

The only complaint that I have seen online has been in relation to the rivets in the framing over time. While we haven’t experienced it at this point, it has been said by a number of people that the rivets do give out.

However, it’s an easy fix – simply thread the thickest screws that you can fit through the holes that are left from the rivet and hold them in place with locking nuts (shout out to Tracey R on Amazon for this solution).

I also want to add that this is NOT chew resistant. If you’re looking for a bed that you can leave alone with a chewer, there are other manufacturers that create beds specifically marketed as ‘indestructible’ for this purpose.

Great for Home or On the Go

While the bed clearly has a camping-esque appearance, it has a wide variety of uses. This will quickly become your go-to choice for beach days, puppy daycare, kennel stays, camping, hotels and even just relaxing around the yard. What more could you ask for as a pet parent? Right?

Added Comfort for Your Pup

Going back to the original reason that we were searching for an elevated bed – Daviana has now reached the stage that she starts to feel stiffness in her hips after a long hike. This isn’t going to stop her from running, playing and hiking with us (she loves it too much), but we have to take extra steps to make her comfortable afterward. With the elevated hike, she no longer has to make her way down onto the ground.

If you find that your dog isn’t comfortable on the bed as it is, you can also add a padded dog bed on top of the cot. Just watch when your dog is getting onto or off the cot as the bed may slip.

An additional perk of an elevated bed is that it allows for better airflow during warmer weather. This is important if you are camping without access to air conditioning on a hot summer day.

    1. Thank you! They are LOVING on their beds lol We’ve been spending a lot of time outside recently in the back yard and they are constantly sprawled out on them lol

    1. They are loving it. Indy will actually lead me to it if it’s folded up and nose at it to tell me that I need to open it up for him haha

    1. They have been IN LOVE with them from the moment that they came in the mail and we put them out. Took them no time at all to claim the beds and make themselves comfortable lol

    1. Oh no! lol We’ve never had a problem with our dogs peeing on their beds, but I could see how that would be a concern!
You may be better suited with some of the heavy chewer beds I linked as many of them use a more vinyl type fabric that can be rinsed off.

  4. He looks so comfy on that bed. I bet every dog would love it! If I would have dog that would be one of the first thing to buy

    1. They have a variety of indoor beds with thick padding but we were at a loss on how to make them as comfortable as possible while camping. This hits the mark!

  5. Oh, these are great aren’t they? Bet your lovely dogs love these. I don’t have any pets, but I would be buying them something like this if I did.
    Thanks for sharing!

  6. These are so awesome! I love seeing all of the new things that people keep coming up with for our fur babies. Now it looks like they are ready to go camping with you!

  7. This is an amazing product to have. My family and my parents go camping quite a bit spring, summer and fall. Our pups usually come also, this would be a great addition to our camping set up for the dogs. They are decently priced too.

    1. The price is great for the quality of the product. We are so happy with the product – and they pack up so easily for travel too!

  8. All the dogs look very comfortable on the bed! I’ve never seen one like this but it looks like a really good idea, especially as it’s much more portable than the bulky, traditional ones. And as you mentioned, if it isn’t soft enough, you can add a layer on top.

  9. They look so cute on them! It sounds like a great product, especially for those who camp/ travel a lot with their furry friends. Hugo is a massive diva and only sleeps on fluffy things so he’d need a blanket for his. Great that yours are loving theirs x

    1. They are definitely both loving them, especially Indiana. He will actually nose at it when it’s folded up to ask us to put it down for him lol

  10. I have two dogs, and one is a slightly old german shepherd and I think she would love something like this! She loves spending her time outside in the garden, but I think she would really appreciate having a comfortable bed to lounge on bless her – thanks for sharing, great post x

    1. It’s great for an older dog. My girl Daviana (the brown dog) is a German Shepherd mix – she’s 12 years old and it’s a great option to avoid her having to get down to the ground to lay down.

  11. my dogs love these. We have one on the patio and the other in the office. In the Texas heat, it helps them out a lot!

  12. This is the best thing ever! We have an old outdoor couch cushion we use for the dogs that we put down for them to lay on but this is so much better! Keeps them up off the ground and probably cooler as well. And I can just fold it up when they aren’t using it. Totally looking into this!

  13. I love this review. It is definitely an article that I will share with anyone who will benefit from it. Seeing this review will definitely make me consider using products from this company in the future.

  14. As a fellow keen camper and lover of dogs, this looks like something that looks so practical and comfy for our furry friends. I just love how it collapses down in comparison to a camp chair and is still fairly lightweight. If your dogs use this at home, they will already love it when you take it with you on trips to the great outdoors. Definitely something that so many camping dog lovers will see great value in.

    1. That was the plan in pulling it out here. I wanted to give them time to get used to it before we head out. That being said, when I ordered it early I wasn’t anticipating having THIS much time at home before we go anywhere… lol

  15. Our dog loves to lay down on the sofa, and my mother always scolds the dog. I guess it’s time to buy this for Jacob. For sure, everyone will be happy. hahaha
